Tanya Ravinski

On March 31, Tanya Ravinski, of Annapolis, died at age 70, from brain cancer, surrounded by her cherished loved ones. She was born in Moscow, USSR, on Aug. 8, 1952, and is predeceased by her parents, Simon and Maria Ravinski, as well as her cherished son Andrew Petukov. She is survived by her devoted husband, Sergei Petukhov; loving son Alex Petukhov (daughter-in-law Shannon Petukhov); and three beloved grandchildren, Julia, Bella and Olivia Petukhov. On April 2, Elaine Marcus Kaplan, of Bethesda, died peacefully. A lifelong educator, she was born in New York City to Sol and Gertrude Marcus on Oct. 1, 1934. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard; brother, David; and son Andy. She is survived by her sons Michael (Susan Sawyer) and Rick (Patricia Dutra), and her daughter-in-law, Carol Golin. Donald Howard Weiss

On April 6, Donald Howard Weiss, of Potomac. He was 88. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 65 years, Carole H. Weiss, and his eldest son, Peter J. Weiss. He is survived by his two children, Evelyn Weiss Zawatsky (Marc) of Barrington, R.I., and Richard A. Weiss (Tara) of McKinney, Texas; four grandsons; one granddaughter and one great-grandson; and his sister, Susan Gitlitz, of Delray Beach, Fla. He was the son of the late Sylvia (Plateis) Weiss and Jack J. (Jacob) Weiss. He was born on June 1, 1934 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1955 from New York University. He joined IBM as a systems engineer in manufacturing and was one of the pioneers in early mainframe computing. After retiring in 1994, he volunteered at the Smithsonian Institution. Murray Stein

On April 12, Murray Stein passed away in his home in Potomac with his wife by his side. He was 91. He earned a juris doctorate degree and several awards in international law as extradition attorney of distinction for 40 years in the Justice Department. As the attorney of record in the extradition of Nazi war criminals, he returned Klaus Barbie, Andrija Artuković, Hermine Braunsteiner, Ivan Demjanjuk among others working with Simon Weisenthal and Serge and Beate Klarsfeld.

Murray graduated from George Washington University Law School, simultaneously teaching advanced courses in mathematics. He then served in the U.S. Armed Forces. He was an engaged member of the Consular Corps. Murray and his wife were active members for over 50 years at Washington Hebrew Congregation.

In addition to his beloved wife, Barbara Baylus Stein, Ph.D., Murray is survived by four daughters and their spouses: Elisa Stein Lata, M.D. and Adrian L. Lata, M.D.; Julie Stein Bender Maeir, J.D. (David); Cheryl Stein Cloh (Steven, J.D.); and Rona Stein Israelson (Scott, M.B.A.). He is also survived by nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The son of Joseph and Elizabeth Broker Stein, Murray was preceded in death by his brother Harold Stein. Under supervision of Sol Levinson & Bros. Funeral Home.

Lloyd Harrison Needle

On April 6, Lloyd Harrison Needle. Loving husband of Nadine Needle (née Eisenberg); beloved father of Martin (Barbara Wachter) Needle; loving grandfather of Carli and Ryan Needle; and survived by many loving cousins.

Lloyd was born in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 3, 1934 to loving parents, Clara and Myer Needle. He attended the Oyster School, Alice Deal Middle School, Wilson High School and the University of Maryland. He was very proud of his two years of service with the Army. Stationed at Fort Myer in Virginia, he worked in personnel and was the youngest member of the Draft Board for the Washington, D.C., district. After working for his uncles Milton Kaplan and Sam Blanken, he founded Lloyd Construction Company, where he built numerous residential communities in the metropolitan area, including Walnut Grove, an apartment complex in Rockville. He joined Bresler & Reiner as vice president where he focused on land development and residential construction. Marcia Zabronsky

On April 17, Marcia Zabronsky passed away in Silver Spring. Born in 1935 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Marcia graduated from the High School of Music and Art and received her B.A. degree in early childhood education from Brooklyn College.

For the first 20 years of her career, Marcia taught kindergarten and first grade in public schools in New York City and Arlington. Moving to Silver Spring in 1973, Marcia shifted to geriatrics, serving as a recreational therapist at a nursing home in Silver Spring, where she worked for 25 years.

She is survived by brother Martin Rosansky (Diana); children Jerry Zabronsky (Anne) and Dan Zabronsky (Robbin Marks); and grandchildren Liz, Kat, Hope, Eve and Sam. She was preceded in death by husband Herman Zabronsky. Contributions may be made to WETA-FM Classical.

George Johnson

On March 30, George Johnson died. He was born and raised in Long Island, N.Y., by his parents, Harry and Jessica, with sisters, Shirley and Sylvia. After graduating from Cornell and Columbia Law School, George was a captain in the Army and served in Vietnam. After completing his service, he advocated for an end to the war in Vietnam.

He was a founding member of Fabrangen chavurah in Washington, D.C. He was involved with Adas Israel’s Study Group, the Loon Lake Jewish Center, and Yeshivas Elimelech. He served on the board of the Haberman Institute.

In the 1970s, he published works as research director of the Institute for Research and Policy of the Synagogue Council of America; served as an attorney for several federal agencies; was a partner at Dickstein Shapiro; and for the past decade wrote as a senior editor for Moment Magazine. He is survived by wife Ayah; sons Ethan (Leora) and Ari (Jessica); and grandsons Eli, Rami and Gavi.

Janet Litwin Herman

On April 15, Janet Litwin Herman passed away in Bethesda. She is survived by brother Allen Litwin; children Carolyn and Nathanael Herman (Jodi); and grandchildren Olivia, Eli and Sam. Born in 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Janet graduated from Walnut Hills High School, received her English degree from the University of Cincinnati and a M.A. in English from UCLA.

She was a high school English teacher for more than 20 years in Columbia. Moving into the city at its inception and living there for more than 50 years, Janet was a pioneer of Columbia and its mission of inclusiveness and innovation. As part of that innovation, Janet, along with her husband, David, helped launch Columbia Jewish Congregation. Contributions may be made to The Arc of Howard County (archoward.org).
