On Sept. 27, Susan Alice Schott. Born on Jan. 12, 1947, in Albuquerque, N.M., she died in Hendersonville, N.C., after a brief illness. From childhood, Susan was dedicated to the care of animals. After high school, she lived two years with her parents in Thailand before attending Western State University in Colorado. She moved to Northern Virginia, where she worked as a social worker in hospitals in Front Royal and Leesburg. Susan earned a degree as a Licensed Veterinary Technician from the Northern Virginia Community College’s Vet Tech program. She was employed at Ballston Animal Hospital and Alexandria Animal Hospital. Over the years Susan fostered and adopted dozens of pets through rescue groups and shelters, some injured and disabled. In retirement, Susan relocated to Hendersonville, N.C., where she continued her dedication to animal welfare as a volunteer. After a year of study, she converted to Judaism and took the name of Miriam, her mother’s first name. Susan is survived by a wide circle of friends in Northern Virginia and Hendersonville, her brothers, James Schott (Carol) and Paul Schott (Jean), and many nephews and nieces. Her brother Stephen Schott predeceased her. Susan was laid to rest at Green Haven Preserve in South Carolina, in a natural burial with a service officiated by Rabbi Leah Doberne-Schor.
